Månljuset sprider sig över Saint-Paul och det älskande paret som njuter av varandras sällskap. Med staden vilande i bakgrunden och åsnan redo att ta tillbaka dem, verkar paret tveksamma, som om de inte vill lämna platsen eller varandra. De är fångade i månskenet och varandras famn, vilket Chagall mästerligt uttrycker i detta kärleksfulla och drömlika motiv.

Dalí has isolated the central image of his best-known painting and given it the same title.  It is a simple figure: a limp watch draped over the branch of a dead tree. Dalinean time is not rigid; it is one with space…fluid.  The unexpected softness of the watch also represents the psychological fact that the speed of time, while precise in scientific use, is widely variable in human perception.  When we are involved in pleasant activities or in work that absorbs all our attention, 'time flies', but when we are mired in boredom or discomfort, it drags.  The limp watch no longer 'keeps' time; it does not measure its passage.  Thus, the speed of our time depends only on us.

Peder Mørk Mønsted, född 10 december 1859 i Balle Mølle vid Grenå, död 20 juni 1941 i Fredensborg, var en dansk målare.

 

Mellan oktober 1875 och januari 1879 var han inskriven på Kunstakademiet i Köpenhamn där han studerade för Frederik Vermehren, Julius Exner och Niels Simonsen. Han studerade även en kortare tid på P. S. Krøyers målarskola. Vintern 1882–1883 var han elev till William Bouguereau i Paris.

 

Mønsted målade landskapsbilder i realistisk stil som han utvecklade under vistelsen i Paris. Till hans favoritmotiv räknas snöiga vinterlandskap, stilla vattenytor och skog. Han hade flera utställningar både i Danmark och utomlands. Efter sekelskiftet och fram till sin död var han en av Danmarks mest populära landskapsmålare.

ENGLISH:

Mønsted was born at Balle Mølle near Grenå, Denmark. He was the son of Otto Christian Mønsted and Thora Johanne Petrea Jorgensen. His father was a prosperous ship-builder. At an early age, he began receiving painting lessons at the art school in Aarhus. From 1875 to 1879, studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts with Niels Simonsen and Julius Exner. In 1878, Mønsted studied under the artist Peder Severin Krøyer In 1882, he spent some time in Rome and Capri then, the following year, visited Paris, where he worked in the studios of William Adolphe Bouguereau. He gradually developed a personal style of academic naturalism.

 

Mønsted was a habitual traveler. In 1889, he went to Algeria. Three years later, he travelled to Greece, where he was a guest of King George I who had been born a Danish prince. While there, he also did portraits of the Greek royal family. After that, he visited Egypt and Spain. During his later years, he spent a great deal of time in Switzerland and travelling throughout the Mediterranean. His travels produced numerous sketches that became paintings he presented at several international exhibitions. He was especially popular in Germany, where he held several shows at the Glaspalast in Munich.
